Each week, the hours and days pass us by. Many people fly by the seat of their pants Monday through Friday only to collapse onto the couch to spend the entire weekend recovering.
While I’m all for sleeping in and catching up on Hulu and Netflix TV and movies, I personally believe a smarter way of relaxing exists. Before I share my secret, I’ll provide a disclaimer that I consider myself a highly active person and admittedly, do not easily relax. Multiple friends have pointed this out to me and my reply continues to be that I simply get re-energized by active relaxation, rather than passive relaxation. Regardless, the advice I am sharing today holds true.In preparation for writing this blog, I spoke to some of my friends about what they do to relax after a stressful day. By specifically integrating mental breaks and relaxation techniques throughout the day, you will feel more refreshed and rejuvenated than by binge watching the latest season of Breaking Bad when in reality, you had plans to meet up with a friend but were too exhausted.
Here are a few suggestions for getting started:
- If you have five minutes… Send an email or text message to someone you love and let them know you’re thinking about them. Even better, if you happen to have a stamp and a card handy, send a handwritten note. Paying it forward can have amazing benefits for your mind.
- If you have 15 minutes… Unplug, put your phone away, and get out for a brisk walk. Take in all the sights and sounds (even if you are doing laps around your office building). Fully immerse yourself in the experience and appreciate the peaceful moment.
- If you have 30 minutes…Download the Pocket Yoga app and try the Desert practice, which has a specific focus to unwind the mind, unravel the body, and open the heart.
- If you have an hour… Write, read, cook, take a nap – whatever your heart’s desire! We each have our own techniques for relaxation and re-energizing, and regardless of what it is, it is important to actively seek out time to do it.
