Recently, I finished reading Stephen King’s On Writing and found myself lost in his world of thought provoking questions, eloquent words, and fascinating life story. Admittedly, I had not previously read any King novels due to my inability to stomach tales of horror. Now, I’m hooked on his writing style and intend to attempt to get through one.
King intertwines his life story with tips on storytelling, grammar and editing. He effortlessly weaves writing advice into an autobiographical account of his life; an accomplishment I can hardly begin to understand. Fascinated by his approach to the art of writing and his well-deserved reign over the field, I have discovered a new drive toward living a genuine life. By immersing myself in the story of a well-respected and talented writer, something I hope to someday be as well, I feel a new connection to my work. Viewing the world through King’s eyes for a brief moment, I realized that the only way to truly feel fulfilled through something (in my case, writing) is to immerse yourself 100% in it, and not doubt even for a moment.
One of my favorite lines in the book (page 232) reads:
“It is, after all, the dab of grit that seeps into an oyster’s shell that makes the pearl, not pearl-making seminars with other oysters.”
To accept uncertainty is the most challenging and trying thing. Yet to confidently pursue your dreams and refuse to let any circumstance derail you may be even more difficult. Overcoming these mental obstacles will lead to a successful, fulfilled and genuine life.
In what ways do you immerse yourself to enrich your life?
