Hi friends! I hope you’ve all been having amazing weeks and have amazing weekend plans! Even if they only involve being wrapped in blankets watching Netflix. I fully approve and totally consider that amazing plans. Did everyone have a fun Halloween?! My boyfriend and I helped my parents pass out candy and I made some paleo pizza from Juli Bauer’s new cookbook. Everything I’ve made from her new book is seriously amazing! And I haven’t even made any desserts yet!! Can’t wait to try out that section 😛 So like I was saying, we helped my parents pass out candy and of course I couldn’t pass up putting on an old prom dress and “pretending” to be a princess. I only wish I could have found my crown!
Needless to say, it was freaking awesome and I even convinced my boyfriend to dress as Beast next year. Winning! Last weekend also marked the release of our Paleo Pumpkin Cookbook! I still can’t believe we wrote an ebook and it is probably one of the coolest feelings to put something out their like that for other people to see and use! If you haven’t got your hands on a copy yet, make sure to click the link to find out how! If pumpkin isn’t your thing, that’s okay, we can forgive you (maybe). We have plenty of other recipes on the site to fill those fall cravings! Finley from Play Paleo recently did a guest post for us featuring an amazing stuffed squash recipe. Check it out here! Another tasty squash recipe comes from Candice’s kitchen. Be sure to check out her twice baked acorn squash! Fall is in full swing! 🙂
As I mentioned in my last post, the year is flying by! Christmas is in 7 weeks! While I love this time of year, it can also be super stressful when trying to find the perfect gift for someone. Today I wanted to talk to you guys about my 3 favorite workout accessories in hopes that they might inspire a gift for someone or even inspire you to step up your accessory game!
Now when I say workout accessories, I’m going beyond the obvious of a general pair of shoes, workout clothes and headbands. For example, if you’re a runner, you’re going to have a pair of running shoes, like those sold at vessifootwear.com. I wouldn’t consider those an accessory. Same thing for most CrossFitter’s, you have a pair of shoes you WOD in. And I’d hope that none of you are working out in jeans. I think those things are fairly obvious. Instead I will talk about the things I’ve used the most and would consider the most important when wodding.
1. Wrist wraps
No matter if you are a newbie or a veteran CrossFitter, I think everyone could use some wrist wraps! I know a lot of newbies who start CrossFit have really immobile wrists and a lot of trouble holding handstands or weight overhead because of weak wrists. Now I’m not saying you should wear these all the time but I know they definitely helped me when I first started and have continued to help me as my weights increase. These along with some wrist mobility exercises have helped me immensely! The cool thing is how many different types there are! The one pictured above are my favorite but I also have a few fun pairs that have TMNT on them and another pair with unicorns on them. Some other fun designs can be found here.
2. Weightlifting Shoes
I know, I know, why do we need so many shoes?! Besides a shoe to WOD in, I think having good lifting shoes is important. Now if you’re only lifting maybe 1-3 times a week, I get it. Spending $50-$200 on a pair of weightlifting shoes is a little unreasonable. However, if CrossFit or Weightlifting is your sport, 3+ days a week, I highly recommend getting a pair! I remember when I tried a friends pair on for the first time before buying my own and I couldn’t believe it. Squats felt so much better, everything just felt SO solid. I know this sounds crazy but after I bought a pair all my lifts went up a few pounds. Don’t believe me? Read this article on why you should get a pair and what to look for in a weightlifting shoe. While Reebok Nano’s or Nike Metcon’s are great, the stability in a weightlifting shoe can’t be beat. I personally love the Nike Romaleos 2 but I also have a pair Reebok CrossFit Lifter which are great for WODs. I’ve also heard good things about Adidas lifters as well.
3. Your Own Jump Rope
Surprising?! While there a bunch of things I feel are “essential” to my CrossFit experience, I really tried to narrow it down to the 3 things I couldn’t WOD without. My own jump rope is definitely one of those. For awhile I was spoiled. I worked out at 6AM and always was able to use the same jump rope. Then I was finally able to make a 5PM class and another girl had grabbed *MY* jump rope. I tried using others but it was disaster. I finally bite the bullet and got my own. While there are a variety of jump ropes on the market, Rx Smart Gear is my favorite. The site goes through what jump rope is right for you based on your experience and height. I’ve been to a few gyms that only have 5 jump ropes on hand so having your own definitely comes in handy! Rx Smart Gear has a variety of colors to choose from AND they’re having a huge sale right now so head over to the site and grab yours today!!
As I said earlier, I could go on and on about what other things I have in my “accessories bag” but I feel these are the top 3 most important that I use almost on a daily basis. However, for those that are curious, here are a few others I love too!
- Knee Wraps- I personally love Rehband but Hook Grip also has a less expensive and more lightweight pair.
- Tape- Tape has saved my hands SO much during CrossFit. With a lot of bar touches, your hands get pretty rough. If you’re hook gripping on your lifts (as you should be), you’ll definitely want to tape your thumbs. For gymnastics stuff, The Natural Grip is great!
- Weightlifting Belt-I love these for heavy squats! When I was a newb, I used a belt all the time. However, I wasn’t using it the right way. If you’ve never used one before, make sure you read up on the most effective ways to use it! Rogue Fitness offers a variety of belts but I also like Unbroken Designs because their stuff is so cute! Weightlifting doesn’t have to be boring!
